Rationale |
so far on this media course i have learned a variety of different techniques and skills which i have noticed are quite helpful when doing work because they help your work to be at a better quality will use during this unit in each parts such as research, production and the evaluation. for the secondary research i have learned techniques which include obtaining information from trustworthy sources, this means not copying anything from places similar to Wikipedia and slide share/prezzie. another technique i learned for researching is that if i want to show work or use work that isn't mine i have to use a technique that is called Harvard referencing which means if i show other peoples work, it wont be classed as plagiarism and you are therefore allowed to show this work because you are showing the source and saying where the work came from. one thing i learned from primary research is that its trust worthy if you do a focus group or a survey and have peers in the focus group or do the survey because you are gathering data from peoples opinions. for the production i have learned that a production schedule is quite important so that you can keep track of time and you know when and what time you are ether planning filming or editing. another important part of the production is to have a good quality script and the skills i have learned from this is how to write a good quality script and and what type of style to to write the script in, that being the font, the dialogue and how the text is laid out on the page which helps to make it look professional. personally i think that the script is important when you come to filming because the actors can read it and it shows that you are prepared. a lot of the work that i have done, i wouldn't have been able to have achieved before the course started because i wouldn't have known any of the skills and wouldn't have been able to achieve what i can now and i feel that learning these techniques and skills have help a lot when it comes to research and planning and production. one of the most important skills i have learned is how to keep to the deadlines and not only is this helpful for this media course, it is also helpful for future work later on in life and it helps to keep track of work and make sure all the work is done on time so you don't look like a bad employee. in terms of production, the techniques i have learned from production are some different editing techniques which include; jump cuts, montages, parallel editing, and j and l cuts which help to make a video interesting and some basic camera shots i already know include; panning, dutch angles and tracking shots. personally i feel like learning how to keep to a deadline as a skill is very important to have especially later on in life because i want to go into editing and i feel like reaching a deadline is important when you are editing a video.

Project Concept |
for our idea we have decided to do a music video. i didn't want to do a music video because its "easy", but because i personally think that this production will be enjoyable as the previous music video we did was enjoyable to try and do but we only had three days to complete the task, however, in this unit we have four weeks in order to get everything done and in comparison, four weeks is a lot longer than three days. throughout this production i will use the different techniques and skills that i have learned in order to produce good quality work. for our planning i will use information from websites which are not "Wikipedia", "slide share" and "prezzie" to make sure that the information i am using is reliable and trustworthy. when i get the information i will Harvard reference each piece of information that i use to make sure that it doesn't count as plagiarism and people know where i sourced the work from. when it comes to the practical work, i will use different editing techniques such as the ones i mentioned in the rationale and i will use different camera shots such as the ones that i mentioned in the rational i will use these techniques to make the music video more interesting and fun for viewers to watch. personally i feel like adding these techniques to the music video will make it a better quality.
|
Evaluation |
in terms of evaluation, i will ask my teachers for their opinions and feedback in order to improve my work. after each week i will complete a weekly blog which is a summary at the end of each week where i can look back at the previous week and talk about the work i have completed and find out what work needs finishing and/or needs to be completed and whether i am on track or not. another potential method of evaluation i can do is i can ask other people in my group for their opinions and their thoughts and if they need help with anything i can help them out with their work if necessary. also i have realised that the work throughout the group will be varied in quality and quantity, so the evaluation is necessary and as a group we can ask each other how to improve and what to do.

Research
Code and Conventions
To start with there are two main types of music video, performance, narrative, mixture, cameo, animation and abstract. Performance is where the band or the music artist is using their instruments by playing the song throughout the video, this is usually done in concerts or live shows. Narrative is where the song involves a narrative and the lyrics have some meaning to the visuals of the music video. There is also mixture which contains the two in the same video where it keeps cutting between the two types with jump cuts. Cameo is where the actual artist doesn't appear in the music video but they are somehow involved in the narrative of the video. Animation contains no real footage as it is all animated and computer generated, this can contain stop motion most commonly. Abstract is where none of these elements are included at all.
Camera Shots:
The camera shots used in music videos tend to be long shots, mid shots and close ups. This creates emphasis on the artist and the location they are in. The close up shots are also used to show the emotion of the main character in the music video and the movement of the lips of the artist if they are singing to the song in the video, it can also be used to sell the artist in a way by showing their face on the whole screen so you remember what they look like. We will probably me mostly using mid shots and close ups as the actor in our video will be lip syncing to the music and we will be showing a lot of emotion on his face throughout the video. The mid shots will be used when we are having multiple people in the shot as we need to be able to fit them all in the camera, these are also used a lot in the video we are making.
Camera movement:
The movement of the camera is used to follow the artist throughout the music video. The movements contain tilts, crane shots, tracking and pans. Tilt shots can be used to show how the actor is feeling and to add dramatic effect to the video. Tracking is the most common, this is where the camera follows the character throughout the video and shows everything they are doing. Pans are used to transition from one place to another in music videos and they can also be used to show a dramatic scene. We will be using the camera movement in our video to show how the actor is feeling throughout as the camera is mostly following him and showing you the emotions on his face.

Survey Responses
for the second question, i asked "what would you like to see in a music video?" and the respondents talked about how they wanted to see different camera shots which we will take in to consideration as we want to make the music video look unique and the more types of camera shots we use the more interesting the video becomes, one respondent talked about how they would like to see singing and dancing, this we will also take into consideration but i don't necessarily think we will include a lot of dancing in the music video as we want to keep to the style of the original video. another respondent suggested that we use animated characters in our production but i do not think we will use animated characters as they do not fit with the idea that we are trying to go for.
|
for the next question i asked "what genre of music video do you like?" when i was analysing the respondents answers there was a variety of different responses but i dont think that we will try to include them as the genres that the people have suggested and talked about arent really relevant to the genre that we are trying to go for as we are trying to keep it the same as the genre of the original music video also i dont think that we would change the genre anyway. i gathered that a lot of people like upbeat music and i think that the music that we have chosen is quite upbeat and i think that a lot of people would enjoy it
|
for the next question on the survey i asked people what type of music the like but i personally i feel that it was a bit pointless as it is a similar question to the previous question which was asking people what genre of music they like and after analysing the results i noticed that the majority of people picked pop and heavy metal which also suggests that people enjoy listening to upbeat music. in terms of genre, i think that the song we have chosen comes under pop and that is good because it means that some people will like it. after discovering that people enjoy listening to pop this has been quite helpful as results for the survey
|
the next question was "where would you like the music video to take place?" and i found the results on this question to be quite helpful as the variety of different answers and responses have helped us because we will try and film in some of the suggested locations and people have suggested we film in industrial type of areas and areas where its run down and abandoned which i think would make the music video look unique and it will make it more interesting. one respondent suggested we film somewhere fun this is interesting because it means that we can put anything as a background for or video.
|
for the next question i asked people what sort of thing s they would like to see in the background, that being props or activity and looking back at the results i noticed that people suggested people which i think means background dancers and people singing to the song in terms of including these i think that will have background dancers and singers to show that people are actually singing the song. one respondent suggested that we use metal works in the background of the music video, im not sure if we will use metal works in the background of the video because we are trying to recreate the video as best as we can and there arent really any metal works in the background of any shots so i dont think we will include metal works.
|
for the last question i simply asked for any other suggestions or ideas. looking back at the responses i didnt find any of the suggestions to be useful or helpful because one idea was celebrity endorsement, and another idea was that we must include music which i think is irrelevant as it is a music video and we will already be including music.

1st Video: Everyday - Logic
mise en scene: in the first screen grab you can see that the characters are in a parking lot and they are getting out of their cars, you can see that the characters are wearing general shirts and ties denoting that they perhaps work in an office building. one thing to notice in this screen grab is the vehicles that they have travelled in, the artist of the song plays the character on the right who you can see owns an old car which looks like it wasn't expensive to purchase. also the dull stone silver colour of the car connotes the fact that the car wasn't expensive to buy. moving on to the other, more noticeable vehicle in the scene which belongs to his boss, you can easy understand that it is reasonably new and you can tell that it is expensive because it is clearly a super car. the bright yellow paint on the super car connotes that it is a car which is expensive. these elements have been used to clearly show the difference between their class because you have the bright yellow high-end super car next to the the not so brightly coloured stone silver coupe and this is effective because it relates to how the characters treat each other later on in the piece. in terms of adding something similar to this, in the video we see that the main character steals the high end car because he has had enough of the job he was doing and in our music video the main character is geeky and his slipping and sliding on his roller skates and then he gets tattoos and changes his hair to try and impress a girl that he likes. in a feel i feel that theses scenarios are similar because of the change of the characters.
characters: in terms of characters, the main character in this video is played by the artist of the video and throughout the video we see that he is mistreated at his workplace and eventually he gets angry and quits is job. whilst he is quitting his job he says to the boss to 'shut up' and that he 'is the most hardworking person there' this also helps us to believe that this character has been mistreated and that he is the main character as he is in a lot of different shots and claims that he is the most hardworking person there. this character both fits in but at the same time because he dresses the same as all the other office workers that you can see in the background and there are different shots of him talking to the office workers one of the reasons behind the fact that he stands out is that he is given a lot more tasks than the other workers for example there is a scene where he is carrying around 16 cups of coffee and there are people in his way as he is trying to go up the stairs another reason as to why he stands out is that he claims hes the most hardworking person there and he missed Christmas and his own birthday. moving on to the boss we learn throughout the video that he mistreats the main character and you can hear how he speaks to the character.
lighting and colour: looking at both of the screen grabs we notice that the bright yellow super car stands out the most because its bright and it connotes the fact that it is expensive. looking at the rest of the 1st screen grab and the second screen grab all the other colours used in the office background and the colour of the main characters car, you can see that the dull colours connote not necessarily cheap but more dull and boring colours to show that the main characters job is perhaps boring and tedious the dull colours also connote an emotionless atmosphere where its quite dull and people are rarely happy in this environment. in the screen grab where we see that the main character has become a lot older, the sad expression on his face is emphasised by the dull gloomy background colours and as a scene this helps to be quite effective. when we produce our music video, we will try and use different colours to create different emotions in each scene so that its more effective as a whole and the lighting and colour should fit with the lyrics and make it look better. personally i feel that if the lighting and colour is relevant to the lyrics it makes it look and sound nicer.
camera angles: in terms of camera angles, i think that the first screen grab is a good example because when you look at it you see that the yellow super car is more in the foreground than the main characters car this shows that the boss's car is a bright yellow and is important than the main characters dull silver car and i think that this scene is done effectively to show the importance of the characters as well to show their importance and class. taking a look at the second screen grab you can see that the main character is older and he has been centred in a medium shot this is effective as the focus is now brought upon the main character and i feel that being centred helps us to understand the main character's importance in this scene. the camera angles for both screen grabs have been used effectively to help direct our focus as an audience. when we come to film our music video we will try to use multiple camera angles in order to make it look unique and help the audience what elements are important in each scene. each attempt he made was different for example he tried to get her some food and he tried to get her

2nd Video: Forget You - Cee Lo Green
mise en scene: as you can see from the screen grabs that the characters are in some old style classic american diner and throughout the video this is where the characters appear and you see them throughout their child hood so when the are in school then in college and then when they are adults. when they are kids they go there to socialise and hangout and we see young Cee Lo Green trying to talk to the girl he likes but she doesn't like him back so we see this and then they become teenagers and Cee Lo Green gets a job there so he tries to give her flowers but he doesn't succeed because he falls over. when he is younger the text is green either because his name is 'Green' or because it connotes the fact that he cant get her expensive items to show that he likes her.
characters: in terms of the characters the artist of the song is Cee Lo Green and throughout the video it is supposed to be Cee Lo Green growing up and we see different stages of his life so that includes; him as a child, high school years, college years, and at the end where he is successful and Cee Lo Green plays him self at the end where he is an adult. throughout the video we see Cee Lo Green attempt to try and form some type of relationship with this girl who is known as the 'heart breaker' for obvious reasons such as not letting Cee Lo Green have some type of relationship with her and during the stages where he is a child, high school years, and college years he wants to make a relationship but she doesn't and when he is an adult and is successful she wants to have a relationship but he doesn't.
Lighting and colour: after watching the video and looking at the screen grabs you can see that the colours are generally bright and the video seems quite 'funky' and the music is upbeat so the colours in the music video are effective because they fit with the upbeat music. more specifically the text that is around young Cee Lo Green is green and i think its green because obviously his name is Green, not only that but the green connotes a more common colour and shows that perhaps he isn't necessarily poor at that point in the video but he cant afford anything expensive or buy for the girl he likes. the text around the girl he likes is pink and i think that its pink because it connotes his love and affection he has towards her. personally i feel that the lighting fits with the music because it fits with the music to help it look more 'funky' and make it feel more upbeat.
camera angles: after watching the music video i discovered that the camera angles are only close ups and medium shots, but i think this is good as it helps us to see the characters' facial reactions and expressions throughout the song which helps tell the story better.
