Camera Angles
This is a really well-made scene from the classic film "The Silence of the Lambs" the first camera angles you notice are where the characters are looking directly into the lens and they are examining each-other, as soon as the male character lands the first 'blow' on the female character we notice the sudden change in camera angles at 0:33 where i changes from them being equal and it changes into an over the shoulder type of angle and you also notice that the female character is further down in the shot and she is further away and is made to look smaller. The male character however, is made to look a lot bigger and there is more of his face in the shot and the camera angle is a lot higher. from this point the camera points slightly down on her and slightly up at him. you notice that it changes to the female characters point of view because she looks just off camera where as the male character looks directly into the lens. I learned that the female character wants him to answer a survey and when she is too obvious about it it switches to a standoff angle which is a mid shot on each character at around 1:07. Now it has switched around and he is looking just off camera and she is looking directly into it at 1:15. The fact that we are looking at the female character from the male characters point of view shows us that he is interested and as the narrator says "a relationship is starting to thaw" which has now become obvious once pointed out. At this point we think that the female character is 'winning' until the male character decides to "turn the tables" at 1:50 and the the camera dollys for the first time in the scene and it leaves the male character in frame normally and it leaves the female character short sighted and of centre. The narrator says "just when we thought she was winning, she lost" and then the camera angles show both of the characters looking just off camera and it shows us that they are not seeing "eye to eye" anymore. Later on there is a two-shot and it shows both of them in the same frame for the first time in the entire scene at 2:17, the camera is looking up at them and it shows the start of a relationship. After watching this video and understanding the meaning of the different angles has really helped me and will help me when i come to filming my music video and more importantly my short film because there is no dialogue in the short film and we need to be able to understand the characters' relationships, the characters' importance because we are unable to clarify this with dialogue.

This is a scene from a good film called "American Beauty" and in the example video we will look at a scene from the start of the film. The main character is in a meeting with his boss. In terms of the background, we notice that the background is very dull and we see that the background is quite ugly and plain which shows that his job is quite boring along with the boring suit that he is wearing, it shows that his lifestyle perhaps isn't that interesting.
At 0:58 we are able to see how differently these male characters are represented and that is what this scene talks about. in terms of the mise on scene, we can see that in the top characters shot we see that there is hardly any background props to notice in the background which makes the background seem plain and boring. where as if you look at the bottom characters mise on scene we can see that there are a lot of items in this shot which makes it interesting to look at one key difference to notice is the desk and that separates the characters in levels of importance and shows which character is more important. another thing to point out is the position and camera angles. we see that the character at the top is positioned far away from the camera and the camera angle is angled down at him which makes him appear to be small in this shot and if we compare it to the character at the bottom we notice that he is a lot closer to the camera and the camera is angled up at him to show that he is more important. another thing to notice in the scene is the clothing that the characters wear. The character at the top is wearing a grey suit with a grey tie and it fits with the plain boring background this has a big contrast in comparison to the other characters clothing because the bottom character is wearing a more colourful suit and looks more interesting and helps to show that his life is better. we can see that the shot at the top is quite monochrome and the shot at the bottom is a bit more vibrant, even though its an office job they have still showed the difference in importance between the two characters. |
Short film video analysis
This opening clip from the series Stranger Things is a good example of my chosen genre because it has the same idea of the kid going missing and the parent being worried about them, not knowing where they are.
At 0:37 the first thing we notice is the camera angles are establishing the shot meaning that they start off looking into space which suggests to the audience that there is some sci fi element or there will be some sci fi creature that might come later on in the series. The camera then tilts down to a wide shot of the facility where we see how big the facility is and the wide shot helps to see the surroundings which and we see that it is dark and the only information we get is that it’s some sort of national facility which is associated with the government and then a couple seconds later at 0:54 we see only one man in the facility and he is running with the lights flickering and a siren sounding. The flickering lights and sirens connote danger and it helps to show that something has gone wrong. we can also see this from the man’s expression and the speed he is running at. In terms of the background we see long hallways and soft colouring. The colouring is very monochrome because it’s not in black and white but you still see the colours which are dim, this scene also looks quite cold in terms of the light and colouring and helps our focus to be on the man running. The fact that the camera angles are shaky and dolly when he runs helps to intensify this scene, another thing to notice, is at 1:05 we see that when he arrives at the elevator/lift we see him pressing the button as quickly and as fast as he can and he also checks behind him every second to check if what he is running from is following him and it helps to keep the audience engaged. The fact that we never find out a name or any information about this man suggests that he is not the main character nor is he an important character. At 1:44 after the man goes missing we are introduced to a new location and we see what looks like an average American family home and we see automatic water sprinklers which suggest that they are not rich but wealthy and we are just establishing the shot with a still wide shot. Next at 2:00 we are introduced to the main characters in the series we know this by the fact that the characters are characterised and given names and they are the first characters that we see. Another thing to talk about is that each character is given a close up before they are all together in the same shot, this shows that there is a relationship between the 4 characters. In terms of the background and props in this scene, we notice that there are some posters on the wall, they boys have a board game on the table in front of them which shows that it is set in the 80s and we can also tell this from the clothing that the characters wear. In terms of the colouring we notice that the colours aren’t strong but they are warmer than the facility scene, in this scene the colouring is soft and the colour you see mostly is yellow and it’s a bit monochrome. Each of the characters gets a close up in this scene and we see that facial expressions they make when they react to the board game they are playing, they also are quite happy and are having fun. In a film or series this part at the start is called the equilibrium and it means that nothing has gone wrong and the characters are just going about their daily lives. At 2:15 there is a panning shot of the 4 boys with some stairs just in front of the camera, this suggests that they are at the bottom of the stairs and are most likely in the basement, this shows the audience that the basement is a specific space for the children and the family to hang out and spend time in when there are no guests around. It changes and their game becomes different when he aggressively places down the “Demogorgon” on the table the children intensify the game and then the intensify stops when they drop the dice on the floor and the children come back to reality and they have to go home. At 4:00 one of the characters “Dustin” goes upstairs to “Mike’s” sister “Nancy”, and he tries to offer her the last slice of pizza and this scene is perhaps not as significant as the other 2 scenes but is important as it shows what type of character the sister is and it also introduces her as a new character and from the couple of seconds we see her At around 5:35 when the character "Will" goes missing the music cuts off and it becomes all silent, another thing to notice about the background are the connotations because the dark and dim colouring connote bad things like death or danger. The woodlands surrounding connote a lot of danger and can look unsafe. A good thing to realise here is that parents watching this opening would think about their own children and it would worry them that the characters in the film are young boys out on their bikes late at night and judging by the background it looks like you could easily get lost. At 5:55 there is a medium shot of him on the bike and as you can see there is very little lighting and the main light we focus our attention on is the light on the front of his bike. The camera changes and we see a figure for like a split second which is known as a jump scare, Will then runs home after crashing and there is no one home. He is home alone and the dog is barking which as an audience member, you know that if the dog is barking then that means that there is something wrong. Overall, this fits my genre because it is also a thriller, it’s the same concept with the child going missing and the parents being unaware of it. In terms of what I will take from it I will use things like hand held camera angles to help create intensity and I will make sure that I correct the colours to help set the mood of the scene, for example when something bad will happen I will make the colours monochrome so it makes it feel cold and unnerving. I will use different camera shots like close ups to show the characters face, and a long shot witht the characters in to show a relationship. |
The Goonies is a classic film about a group of boys that go on an adventure without the parents knowing, this film is a family film but you could say that there is an element of thriller in there. This film ties in with my genre because like my idea, there is the concept of someone’s child going missing without them knowing. The scene I will be looking at is the scene where they leave the house and start their adventure.
At 0:00, the very start of the clip we can see first of all how the characters dress is very 80’s style clothing. The camera angle is positioned in the corner of the room and it helps to establish a relationship between the characters and it helps to establish where they are in the house, from the fact that there is a fridge and what looks like an oven in the corner we can understand that it is a kitchen. In terms of the colouring I feel like the colouring is warm because the lamps in the house are yellow and they look warm. As this film was made in the 80’s you can see that there is very weak saturation and the colours used for the furniture and walls are very dull and boring. At 0:15 there is a close up of the four boys all looking at the old treasure map they found. The fact that all four boys are in the shot shows that there is a relationship between them another thing to notice about this close up is the fact that the treasure map covers their faces so we are able to see their eyes and we can see their eyes studying the map. This helps the audience to see the curiosity in the boys and the fact they want to see what the map means, also the lightning in the background helps to create that mysterious effect and connote that their map is magical. 0:38 is a good close up of the boy with the older boy in the background, this is good because it helps to show the relationship between the two boys and it shows that they are brothers. As you can see the style of the older brother is very 80s style because of his headband and vest is a style that teenage boys wore in the 80s. Next, at 1:05 we see wide shot of the house that belongs to the boy with the brother and the four main characters can be seen running out of the house. This is a good shot because we can see that the house is very American style because of the elevated front porch with the white picket style fencing. Whilst the camera pans down to their bikes we can see that the colours outside make it look cold. At 1:30 there is a panning shot which helps to show the surrounding neighbourhood area which is good as it helps us to understand how populated it is. We also get an understanding of the weather that day which is useful as an extra detail and overall a good establishing shot. At 1:45 we have a shot where we see the mum and the maid enter the house to see the older brother tied to the chair and this is a funny scene because the mothers only worry is the whereabouts of the younger brother and his friends. The fact that that the brother is the closest to the camera shows that he is the most important in this shot for obvious reasons like being tied to the armchair, also we see that the mum enters first and she is stood by the older brother and the maid is stood outside the door. The fact that the mum is stood closer to the older brother shows a relationship between the two characters, in this case mother and son. Another thing to notice is the colours we can see that the inside of the house looks warm however the outside looks cold, the outside shows lighter colouring to show its cold and to help this the maid and the mother can be seen wearing warm clothes. We can understand that the inside of the house is quite warm as the older brother is wearing a vest and in terms of the colouring in the room, we tend to notice a lot of dull brown and beige colouring. In the 80s it was common to have things like dark brown furniture and beige/light brown carpet and walls, these colours can connote that the people are poor because colours such as green brown and grey shows that character isn’t so wealthy and if they wear vibrant colours like red yellow and blue, it shows that they are more wealthy. In this case the colours help to show that the house is warm, and the style of the house is 80s. At 2:08 we see that the boys are cycling through the area and they wave the man who is raising the flag which shows that they are friendly, this also shows a relationship build up between the boys and the man. Judging by the surroundings, it seems like a normal day and the street is quiet because they boys are cycling in the centre of the road and there are only parked cars. 2:20, in this shot we see the older brother swiftly leaving the house, and we have a continuous long shot which stays n one place but follows him when he moves. We see him try to take his bike but the younger brother has let the air down on the tires so the camera turns with him to show a little girl on a bike and he steals it from her. At 2:47 we see a drone shot/ birds eye view shot of the young boys cycling through the woods and this is helps to establish the shot as well as helping to show what the surrounding area is like. The busyness of the trees shows that they are cycling through a forest and the green trees help to connote adventure and exploring as well as freedom. This shot with the trees shows that its peaceful and it isn’t as busy as the neighbourhood with all the parked cars. The camera also follows the boys from overhead which is effective. Overall I think that this is similar to my genre as it also has the same idea of the boys going out on their own without their parents knowing. What ill take from this is the use of camera angles to establish a relationship which I think is very important for a decent narrative. |

For the camera angles I feel like they were done quite well as I noticed the different shots that capture various different emotions and people’s reactions which is good as it adds variety to the amount of shots in a scene and with camera angles and shots you can establish the importance of what happens in the shot so for example at 1:20 when he reaches for a mug and it says “world’s greatest employee” and then when he reaches for the mug a second time at 2:58 we notice that someone has scribbled out “employee” and written “freak” and the close up of this shows that its important, it also helps the viewers to read what has been written on the mug. The main character was bullied at work and the close ups of the main character helped to show is facial reaction. The fight scene at 3:31 where the main character beat all the bullies up to save the girl was good because it had shaky and quick camera movements to show this and I thought that was quite good in comparison to having a still camera shot as it would make the fight less intense. The variety of different camera angles was effective as the different cuts and quick camera movement helped to keep me as a viewer focused on the video, but it also helped to keep the song upbeat as well which makes it interesting to watch and the camera angles helped me as a viewer see how the characters were feeling and it shows the characters looking at the main character and reaction to his appearance which helps to show how the main character was treated and it helps the viewers to build empathy. In terms of the editing in this production, I felt like the editing was basic in terms of the transitions which is not a bad thing as I think this helps us to focus on the video and narrative rather than having some transitions that are over the top because I feel like this would be unnecessary and it would draw our focus away from the story which wouldn’t be very effective. The simple editing is good as the cut to the beat at 4:15 fits well with the music and visuals, the cut to the beat works well because it keeps the video upbeat and smooth and it has a clean effect. In terms of the colour grading you can see that they have made the workplace quite monochrome and made it seem all one colour which helps to show that it’s boring and gloomy. The monochrome lighting in the office work place shows that its quite plain and it helps to show that its boring and the other workers don’t seem to be too happy nut the colouring changes when he gets home as it changes to dark when he steps inside to see his dog and then he takes his dog to the park and the lighting changes to become all bright and warm and the sunset in the background shows that he is happy and the countryside shows freedom. The camera flare shows that it’s bright and joyful. When the man goes back to work we see that the lighting changes to become all monochrome again to show that it’s boring and cold. After work he goes home with the girl and the lighting becomes warm again to show that he is happy. In this music video the narrative is creative and I personally think the storyline works well in terms of getting the emotion across. The first thing we see is that the girl he is interested in, screams at him at 0:07 because of his appearance. The main place where the events of bullying occur are in the office where both him and the girl work. We see throughout how the guy is treated due to his appearance and this helps me as an audience member to build up sympathy towards him and it also helps to build context and helps the audience to care more for the man. At the start of the video we see different shots of the man looking at the girl and admiring her and it helps to build up our understanding that he is interested in her. Throughout the video we see how the man is bullied by is co-workers because of his appearance after talking to the girl at the start of the video we see as soon as she leaves that the co-worker. At 1:22 we see the man drinking from a mug that says “World’s Greatest Employee” on it and he drinks and smiles, later on at 2:58 when we see the same scene of him drinking from the mug, we see that the co-workers have scribbled on the mug with a pen and have changed it to say “World’s Greatest Freak” and it is all due to appearance and helps to show how society treats people who are different. After the office scenes we are introduced to what his home life is like and he lives in what we can assume is an apartment and he has a dog who he goes home to see, we see him take his dog to a field where we see him running and sitting with his dog to show that he has a strong bond with his pet. When he returns home we see different shots of him doing different activities such as cooking, painting, gaming and singing. This shows to the audience that the guy is like any other average person and likes to do activities to entertain himself and A key scene to talk about is the scene where he sees the girl being ganged up on by the other co-workers and he steps in and beats all 3 of them up and saves the girl from being harassed which is good as it makes the girl fall for him and realise that he is not bad. I feel like the music video is very wholesome and it works. |
This video is called brother by Kodaline. I feel like the camera angles are used effectively as I noticed a lot of the angles involved dolly zooming in or out of the subject which is good as the they haven’t used any still shots which would be boring, the slow zooming helps to keep the emotion in the video. In each scene we see a close-up of the younger brothers face which is good as it shows his emotion in each scene and its effective as it allows for the audience to feel empathy towards the younger brother. The camera angle at 0:16 is good as it shows a relationship and it shows that these people are the both parents and I think it’s a good establishing shot that I wanted to point out. The camera angle at the very end showing the picture adds for effect as we see a photo of the boys together before the story ends
Overall in terms of the editing there wasn’t any flashy, colourful transitions between any of the scenes and instead they have used some dip-to-black cuts which I think is appropriate as the fading between each scene helps to keep the emotion of it and it helps add a bit of dramatic effect which with the sad emotion works quite well. One thing I noticed is that the two scenes at the beginning where they have the funeral and then what I assume to be the after party of the funeral both have a monochrome tint on them, but I think this is a good thing as the colouring and desaturation helps to show that the scenes are sad but at the same time they are shown as quite cold and the coldness in the scene helps to show the loneliness of the little boy. In the scenes where the younger brother is spending tie with the ghost of his older brother, I noticed that the lighting is quite warm, and we can see that it is more saturated and that also helps to show warmth. The warm tint and colouring help to show that the boy is happier than he was before because he thinks he is with his brother and the warm lighting stays throughout the time the older brother is there. In the morning when the older brother isn’t there the lighting changes to be colder and it becomes sad again. I feel like the editing in this production is good because they have used colouring and fading transitions to help show the emotion throughout the video. Overall, I felt that the narrative in this video is quite sad and emotional because we see at the start at around 0:05 that it is a funeral and the little boy has lost his older brother. As soon as this video starts, we understand that it is sad because it’s a funeral and parents have lost a child and the child has lost a sibling which shows the viewers that this video is sad. At 0:11 we see the boy walking into a room full of relatives but the fact that the young boy is walking into the room by himself shows that he is lonely now that his brother is gone and then the boy stops at 0:23 and looks at the photo of his brother. Even though the boy is stood in a room full of relatives he is still shown as lonely because we don’t see his parents interacting with him and we don’t see any of the relatives asking him if he is okay or comforting him in any way and it helps emphasise the sadness of the video. At 0:42 we see the boy awake from his sleep to see a figure wearing what appears to be a white cloak and he gets up and follows them. At 1:07 we see that he takes off the cloak to reveal his older brother which as an audience member is quite sad as we have seen that the older brother has passed away and the white cloak signifies the fact that his older brother isn’t real when he sees him, in fact the white cloak shows that his older brother is a ghost and the younger brother thinks its real and as a viewer its sad to watch. The fact that the older brothers ghost interacts with the younger brother shows that the younger brother isn’t lonely in this seen because the two can be seen interacting at 1:23 when the smile at each other. At 1:29 the two can be seen walking past a mirror and the older brother’s reflection is a white reflection and it shows that he is a ghost. At 1:35 we can see that the brothers start to play games and stuff together and as a viewer its nice to see the younger brother happy but we know that the other brother isn’t real, we see different shots of the brothers talking and laughing which shows that they got along as brothers. At 1:55 we see that they make a pillow fort / den type of thing using the living room furniture and we see the brothers fall asleep in their creation facing each other and they happily fall asleep together. In the morning scene at 2:24 we see the younger brother waking up without the older brother and as a view its sad to see the younger brother come to the realisation that it wasn’t real and we see him start to tear down the den and realising that he feel asleep with a picture of his older brother. At 2:58 his parents walk in and rush over to him at 3:04 and hug him and in comparison to the first scene in the living room with his parents this one is better as he receives hugs from his parents making the boy feel a little bit happy to know that they are there and then at 3:11 we see a picture of the boys together in a picture and the video finishes there and overall it’s a sad video and its quite emotional to watch. |
No Dialogue

This video talks about how to create characterisation without dialogue. in the clip we learn that it is easier to have less or a single character in the scene so they don't have to communicate with the other characters and they don't have to then speak. my understanding is that in order to make the scene interesting and add characterisation, you need to give the character a task in which they need to complete and/or goals they need to reach, but whilst they are doing this you need to have obstacles for the character to come across whilst they are doing a task in order to make the scene interesting. In this tutorial we look at a character that is a janitor and you can see the different emotions he goes through whilst trying to complete his task of mopping the floor, we see that he is happy at the start and then we see him start to sing and dance and he feels like he is in a mental asylum, next we see him trip over the bucket on the floor and then it changes the location and we see him on the electric chair which shows how much of a story you can tell with no dialogue, one character, and some basic tasks. from watching this video i now understand how to tel a story with only one character. i understand that i need to have a small amount of characters so they don't have to interact with each other as much and i need to make sure that we see clear facial expressions from the character so the audience are able to understand and feel empathy.

This short film is interesting because the man prints off a black hole and his life becomes more interesting. when the short film starts we first notice the monochrome colouring which is not very saturated and it shows that its cold, dark and depressing. this is emphasised by the mans face and the way he is dressed, we can understand from his face that he is unhappy and fed up. we see that his clothes are scruffy because his tie is loose, his shirt isn't done up properly and his sleeves are rolled up. in the next 30 seconds we are introduced to the black hole on the paper and it makes mysterious abnormal noises which we wouldn't normally here and it makes us confused and curious. the man in the short film discovers that the black hole is mysterious and begins to explore it. we see that he is able to put his hand through it so he uses it to take a snack from the vending machine. after watching the rest of the short film we discover that the man tries to steal from the safe and ends up getting locked inside. in terms of the characterisation its up to the audience what type of empathy they feel for the man because in my opinion he doesn't deserve to be locked in the safe because he didn't look very happy with his job. from this piece i learned that the use of colour and facial expressions are very important when establishing the mood of the character and the mood of the scene and i will do the same for my productions.
|
This video is a stop motion animation, even though I'm not doing a stop motion animation it is still interesting to look into the sounds and camera angles to help establish the location and time of year because when we listened to just the audio we understood that the character was in France and she was walking on snow which suggests that its winter. the use of music helped to make the scene more tense because the music was high pitched and it makes you feel uneasy and you become alert and focused on whats about to happen because the tension is building up. the main character is shown to be quite innocent and ends up getting trapped inside the room which leaves a sad ending. the use of sound and Foley helps the audience to understand that the building is old and ancient, we know this from the creaking of the wood and the hollowness of the room from this animation i have learned the type of music is really effective because the music helps us to understand the mood of a scene and the music helps to create tension and it helps to foreshadow whats about to come.

In this music video we learn that its about a boy who grows up to be gay and its also about being accepted at birth and at death because we see the boys hand being held when he is born and when when he is on his death bed. in terms of the colouring we notice at at the start the colouring is warm and we see mainly blue and pink which shows that we are trying to see if the baby is a boy or girl, the colouring is warm because it shows that the people in the video are happy because they have a new born child. when the boy is in his teenage years the colour begins to go very monochrome and dark which shows that at time he wasn't accepted as being gay so the monochrome helps to show that its sad and we see that when he is at the school dance, he feels alone and we see this because everyone has a partner to dance with and he doesn't so we see him feeling lonely and he doesn't have anyone to dance with and it makes the audience watching feel sad. the lighting changes when we see him as an adult because he gets married to his boyfriend and the lighting becomes all warm and happy and shows that its a significant moment in is life, after his wedding there is a shot of him on his death bed holding his husbands hand and then it shows the shot from earlier where he is a baby and he is holding his mums hand and like i said this shows acceptance. in terms of what i will take from this music video, i will make sure that the narrative is more in depth in terms of the visuals and story line. i will have to make sure that the narrative fits fairly well with the song and i will have to show clear facial expressions from the characters in the video. i will use different colouring and filters to help get the emotion across to the audience.

This is an example of work from a 2nd year university and its a video of what not to do in terms of how to show the emotion, story line, characterisation, camera angles etc. in this film we see that the place is not established and we don't have any idea where the main character is this production is not great as you notice that there is no colouring used in the production to show any emotion in any of the shots, another thing to pick out is all the shots are just set up on a tripod and and pressed record, the camera angles were not thought out and doesn't show any importance of anything in the shots and the camera angles don't really establish anything. In terms of the colouring there is no colouring to show they guys emotion or feelings, as an improvement i think he should make the colouring monochrome when he is outside to show that its cold to make the audience empathise a lot more. the music he used to show his montage wasn't very good and and the Foley he used at the start wasn't good as it could have easily been improved because it sounded muffled and the audio had bad quality. I feel like the montage was acceptable but i think he could've chosen a better song to put over it because the song doesn't fit when he is stuck outside. The narrative was not good as it was bland and it wasn't really that detailed and it was hard as an audience member to feel empathy for his character, i felt empathy for the girl as she looked sad because he was late to their date other than that the camerawork lighting and sound used for the opening was not good and i personally could do a better job. After watching this video i can see what not to do in terms of how to make the narrative and characters effective, i will make sure that the emotion in the scene is obvious and the audience are able to understand how the character feels.

Memento, A Non-Linear example
in terms of which idea i change, i will change the short film so that it becomes non-linear because its currently linear so. when the boys are texting each other i might have this scene at the start but i will have the part where they are laying on the floor come next, i think it in black and white and/or show it as one of the characters thoughts. i think i will try to have black and white scenes which will go in reverse and i will have coloured scenes which will go in order and have it switch between black and white scenes. or what i could do is have the story play forwards in black and white scenes, and have it cut between each text message they send which will colour to slowly reveal the story and answer questions
|
|
Example Video
In this short film the music is used to make the dialogue between the first two characters seem quite intense and when the main character is having a flash back we hear this unusual reverse music to show that its a flash back. when the main character is talking about the woman which we presume was his wife, there is sad music to show that something has happened. the sad emotional music in this scene helps to create the sad emotion that the creators were going for and i feel that the music has been used effectively to show how sad the main character is and the audience are able to feel empathy for him
|
locations
The locations used in this short film are simple yet really effective as it uses the dad as the main character in the production, and we later see his daughter but i think that the location of the house is good as we get to see the background of the character and what their life is like in terms of who they live with and how they live, we learn that the dad is quite sad as we find out that his wife is missing and his daughter is sad. as we see from his bedroom that his shirts are hanging up on the walls to dry and in the kitchen we see that there are dirty plates that need washing. this shows that he is not motivated or cares about his living style. we see that he sleeps alone in a single bed which shows that there is supposed to be a wife next to him and we see him at work we see that it is boring and the monochrome lighting helps to make it seem sad and boring. the next shot of him looking over the near by area its a city type of area and it shows that he lives an urban lifestyle. this helps the audience to understand information about the character and it helps give the character context.

In this short film we see shots of the boy wearing a suit and walking through the countryside which seems strange. the fact that he is in a suit walking through the woods suggests that he is lost and the shot of him walking through the brambles suggests that he is stressed which i think is a really good location. we see change when we see him in a town location wearing more casual clothing and this suggests that he has found a better place and he seems less lost. we notice further on that there is a girl that appears out of thin air and then disappears in to thin air again, from this we assume that she has either passed away or the guy and the girl have recently separated and were in a relationship but are now no longer together. i feel like the shots towards the end where the guy is walking through the countryside is to show that he is going to clear is mind and the big fields give off a sense of emptiness and and calm. like I mentioned before the boy is walking through the woods and countryside suggesting that he is either searching for the girl we see later on or he is lost and trying to find home, the fact that he is wearing a suit and he is in the countrysides

High Wycombe location |
Henley on Thames location |
I feel like the Eden centre in Wycombe would be a suitable location to film in for my short film as it is quite a busy place which is convenient as it fits with my story and it is reachable for the actors. i think it will work as i need a busy area to film in for my short film as that is where my characters meet and find eachother
|
I feel like the town centre in Henley is suitable for a music video as its more of an upper class type of area and it is less busy than Wycombe which is useful and there is a river close to it and i think filming by the river will be an effective spot for the characters to meet and it would make for a good cinematic.

Characters for my productions
Short Film
For the short film my characters are roughly 12 or have recently turned 12 years old which means their costumes or clothing is quite casual as they tend to wear jogging bottoms, hoodies, jeans and trainers. I will have 2 main characters in the short film. For these characters i hope to hit the stereo types of 12 year olds in terms of the way that they dress and act so that would consist of wearing casual clothing and in terms of the behaviour i will have one of them as being quite confident and i will have the other character to be quite shy and nervous. later on there will be a character called the mugger and he will wear dark clothing to connote that he is the enemy and the dark clothing also connotes a lot of negativity so the audience understand that he is the enemy. For the main characters i will have them with brighter clothing to connote innocence as they are young and wanting to explore the bigger world unaware of what lurks around the corner the main characters will have bright lighting to help show the innocence and then the lighting for the mugger changes to become darker to show that the mood has changed from happy to sad.

Music Video
For the characters in my music video I will have them as young characters ageing somewhere between 20 and 30 and the characters will be wearing formal clothing suggesting that they have good jobs and the male character who we focus on works an office job and the boss is shown as angry because he wears sharp clothing and it a stereotypical mean angry boss. the main character day dreams at work to show that the work is boring and it shows a stereo typical office worker. the monochrome lighting at the office will show that its boring and cold. the lighting when he is with the other character is different because he becomes happy when he is with her and it will be brighter to show happiness and when they are together the characters are happy their clothing suggests that they both have boring jobs and they are happier with each other. the characters are a man and woman and they meet each other and become attracted to each other in terms of the main character starts iff happy when h meets her but gets sad at work and then sad after not finding her after work and then happy when she finds him.

Sound and music
|
I wanted to find out about how sound and music is used in films as i feel like it would benefit me in future productions. i wanted to see when the right moments for sound and music were acceptable in different parts of a film. this video talks about when its appropriate to use certain forms of music whether that be intense music for a duel or intense music for a chase scene. they talk about how its good to use instinct to help you decide on a sound track and they also talk about the fact that having ironic music is effective as it makes it seem more interesting and unique. i personally feel like this video looking at music and sound in films helped me in terms of what music i would need to add to my own productions and i would be able to decide if they work or not. i personally have had trouble understanding and finding the correct background sound and music my production as i could never find anything that fits it properly but what they explained about sound and music in film has helped me. |
ColourFrom this video I learned that Colour is used to tell stories within films and over time has been used more effectively to tell stories. colour is used to make different cinematics and scenes more vibrant. the video talks about the different colour wheels that are used when colour grading the scenes. one palette is the monochrome palette where only one colour is used in the scene and another palette that is used is called the complimentary palette where they use two colours to help create emotion. when adding more colours they end up with 3 or 4 colours to make the visuals more vibrant to look at. the more saturation and brightness you add can help vary the effect you're going for. Another palette they talk about is a pastel type of palette where it has a faded effect and it has a retro type of effect which can be used to make the video seem older. you can have really dull colours for a serious scene and even though its really de-saturated, we can see the colour is still there. the more colour you use in a scene, the different colours can help to make a scene seem more vibrant and you can use the colour to show various different emotions and feelings between the characters.
