Using sound
war of the worlds listening task
Practising Foley sounds
note: videos taken by friend
it was quite hard to film Foley because you had to create noises without physically doing what the sound is. for example the walking on leaves Foley was difficult because you couldn't physically walk on some leaves to create the sound for it, i felt that the Foley practise was quite useful because it helps us to be more creative when it comes to making our own sound effects and Foley. as you can see from the videos and titles what methods we used to create the sound we were trying to recreate. For some of them we had to find pieces of wood to hit and scrape which were sounds for things like walking and opening/closing doors. i like the one where its supposed to be the sound of someone stepping on leaves but its actually someone stepping on a wrapper.

Practising adding Foley to video - Jurassic park example clip

We got into groups to record Foley sounds.
Plan: "Dinosaur walking: We are going to have someone wearing shoes with big soles to make heavy steps on a hard surface and then to simulate the large nail tapping the floor we will tap a hard surface with a long finger nail or something similar. kids breathing: For this we will record two people next to each other indoors breathing heavily and to sound like they are in fear of the dinosaur Kids crawling: we will record two people crawling on a hard surface to sound like the kitchen floor surface and then change pace accordingly to how the kids do it in the scene. Kitchen pots and pans hitting the floor: We will get something metal to then hit against a hard kitchen like surface, ideally actual pans but we may have to improvise something else as it could be hard finding pans or pots to use. Dinosaur jumping onto kitchen counter: Someone will jump onto a hollow surface to simulate the sound of the dinosaur feet on the kitchen counter. Kids back on kitchen appliance/counter We will hit a hollow surface to make the hollow impact sound of someones back hitting the surface. Dinosaur noises and sounds: Someone will simulate the sounds with his/her voice to make the dinosaur growls and tongue sounds when the dinosaur is sticking its tongue out." |

Secondary research
From the secondary research i have found out that 11 million people tune in to to BBC radio 4 each week which is quite a big number considering the fact that around 66 million people live in Britain which means that a 6th of the nation tune in each week to listen. I have also found out that people tune in for around 11 hours each week which is quite a lot of time. The Archers made BBC radio 4 quite popular because they helped BBC radio 4 to get 11 million viewers each week.

In terms of the narrative, it gets straight into what happens because there really isn't an intro, an we just hear two guys speaking to each other. what happens at the start is we hear the guy who made it talk about square space then he says that it will be a romance and then after this we hear the two people talking. The closest thing they have to an intro is that when one of the guys at the start are speaking one of them nearly gets hit by a train and then we hear a loud deep voice which is supposed to sound like god or something but the voice says "truth" which is actually their account name. To summarise what happens in the radio drama, a man nearly gets hit by a train but he is saved by some woman and then they appear on the news together and the news team organises for them two to have dinner together. Next Lewis and Annie end up falling in love and they start to see each other but because she saved his life, he starts to buy her gifts and other items but eventually she doesn't like all the stuff he does for her so she says to him if he really loves her then he will catch her so she jumps of the building and looses a foot and then they fall in love again in the hospital.
The names of the characters are Lewis and Annie, Annie describes herself as quite a boring character and she is quite ordinary because even though she is receiving good presents she cannot except them we also learn that she files animal medical records all day which is a fairly ordinary job at the end we find out that she looses a foot. we learn that Annie is quite a caring character but shes realistic. moving on to the character called Lewis, we don't really learn much about him, the only thing we know is that before he met Annie he was afraid of everything and he said when he was on the train tracks before he was saved, he was ready to give up. we also learn that he is quite loving towards Annie. I noticed a lot of Foley throughout the radio drama and the Foley in the background was quite effective because it helped give a little bit of context. what i mean by this is that the sounds used in the background help you to create an idea of where the characters are and what time of day it is. For example towards the end it is night time and if you listen carefully you can hear crickets making noise in the back ground, also when they are in the hospital, you can tell they are there because you can hear a heart rate monitor in the background making a beeping sound effect. At the start you can hear a train sound effect which is quite loud so this suggests that its significant and close, and i like little background noises like dogs barking or doors closing which suggest the area that they are in. also music such as the as the jingle for the wake up america which shows that they are on the news. when i was thinking about what genre the radio drama is, it was easier to figure out because its quite obvious that its a romance because the main characters are Annie and Lewis and they fall in love with each other, and this can be noticed throughout the radio drama where they express their feelings towards each other. this is first noticed when they are having dinner with each other because you can tell by the way that these two characters interact with each other that they are in love. throughout the piece we can tell that these characters are quite caring and they show love towards one another. |

From listening to this radio drama i can understand that there is an organisation and they don't know whats happened to some of their money. one of the workers for the organisation creates a program which has its own mind and is design to crunch numbers, then we learn that the computer program starts do bad things and and starts to effect the company. the computer program asks for a companion because it becomes lonely and afraid, also it asks fro a companion or else it will start creating attack ads and it starts to ruin a company so the companion is for a bank and the original computer program ruins for the insurance company. the computer program starts to effect the workers of the company and they start to end up in the hospital. in the end the computer program ruins the company by doing what it wants and threats the worker that created it so it merges with the program in the bank and the original company falls and the two programs are heard at the end because they say "i am the Franklin group" which is the bank so this shows that they merged.
moving on to the characters, the main character who we hear the most is called Victor, and the only things really learn about him are that he works after hours for the organisation that he works for, also he is quite innocent and he is quite scared, we notice this when he is having a discussion with his program because is trying to keep everything under and the fact that he created program which has its own feelings and he calls it Elizabeth an throughout the piece we learn that Elizabeth starts to behave badly and messes with the organisation, what we also learn, is that Elizabeth asks for a companion because she becomes lonely as she describes and her companion which is a program for a bank is called Franklin and so Elizabeth which is a program for the insurance company, eventually we find out that she threats Victor and starts to send out attack adverts and then she ends up "merging" with Franklin. Overall it was hard to find out a lot of information about the characters because there is not really a description or something to go off of to understand the characters properly. when i was listening to this radio drama i noticed that there was hardly any Foley. the only Foley sounds i was able to pick out were the typing sounds where Victor was using the keyboard to enter his password in to the computer system and the typing noises were quite obvious to hear and that small 3 second piece of audio makes it easier to understand what Victor is doing. the only other Foley sounds i was able to take note of were the fire alarm where the program called Elizabeth sets off the fire alarm quite loudly as a distraction and overlaid with the fire alarm was some water sprinkler sound effects to add background noise and it also helps to make this part of the radio drama sound more realistic and believable. i found it quite difficult to try and decide what genre this radio drama is because when i was listening to the piece, i noticed that there wasn't any specific features which gave me an idea as to what genre the piece is. the only genre i can really think of is that this comes under political genre because that is the genre that this radio drama is closest to because there is a lot of conflict throughout this and there are a lot of debates between the characters of Victor and Elizabeth. i think that this is political because its what i think that it is closest to in terms of its style and the events that take place withing this radio drama. |
